Cristina Reyes Smith is a dance instructor and performer from Charleston, SC. She has been living in the Charleston area for over 20 years. She specializes in Swing Dance instruction including Lindy Hop, The Charleston, The Balboa, and East Coast Swing. She also specializes in Latin Dances such as Salsa, Bachata, Rumba, and Merengue and teaches Caroling Shag.
Cristina has danced across the United States from South Beach to Chicago to San Diego, CA. Through her six month rotations in 2006, she spent time dancing for three months in Atlanta, GA, two months in Washington, DC, and two months in San Diego, CA. While in Atlanta, she performed with the Big George Performance Group and served as a Guest DJ for Hot Jam. She has also danced in cities such as Las Vegas, New York City, Orlando, Chicago, Miami, Raleigh, and Boston . She was first introduced to swing and Latin dancing by dance guru Frankie Hagan who relocated to Raleigh, NC in 2004. Her initial Lindy Hop dance instruction was under Atlanta natives Patrick Manigault and Michelle Daniel. She has also received instruction from Nathalie and Yuval (NYC), Tom and Debra (Washington, DC), Peter Loggins (Los Angeles, CA), Marty and Valerie (Cleveland, OH), Kevin and Carla (San Francisco, CA) and Frankie Manning (NYC). She has attended the USA Grand National Championships, Big Apple Dance Reunion, ATLX Lindy Exchange 2004 and 2005, Atlanta Varsity Showdown 2003 and 2004, and Boston Tea Party 2005. She has studied many of the major dances of the swing family including Lindy Hop, Lindy Charleston, 20's Charleston, Balboa, Blues, East Coast, and West Coast Swing.
Cristina occasionally teams with Latin dance virtuoso Victor Ceron teaching Salsa lessons and performing Salsa demonstrations around Charleston. She has danced Salsa in locations such as Atlanta Salsa Nights, Salsa Cabana in Columbia, SC, La Montana in Greenville, SC, The Copacabana in New York City, The Gold Coast with Latin Breeze in Las Vegas, various locations in San Diego, Orlando's Samba Room and Mambo Cafe, and the Miami Salsa Congress.
Cristina began as co-teacher and dance associate of Frankie Hagan at JB Pivots Club in Charleston, SC in June 2003. She taught swing dance and DJ'ed Wednesdays at JB Pivots after Frankie's relocation to Raleigh, NC in January 2004 until leaving Charleston for rotations in May 2006. She initiated and coordinated Charleston swing events including Kickin' It at Kool Beanz Cafe and Social Saturdays at JB Pivots. She was Founder and President of the Charleston Swing Dance Association (established in September 2004) until 2006. She initiated and coordinated the Charleston Crazy Legs Performance Group from February 2005 to 2006. She also created and maintained the Charleston Swing Newsletter, weekly email list, and www.charlestonswing.com website until 2006. Cristina coordinated the Charles Towne Liberty Jam Swing Dance Weekend in July 2005, Charleston's Atlantic Junction Dance Weekend in May 2006, the Charleston Lindy Exchange in May 2007, and the 2nd Charleston Lindy Exchange "CHEX 2--Back 2 the Beach" in May 2008.
Cristina graduated from the Occupational Therapy program at the Medical University of South Carolina in December 2006, and she currently works full-time as a pediatric occupational therapist. She and Bryan have been happily married since December 2006. They continue to reside in the Charleston area and provide private dance lessons and special event performances.
